We opened The Golden Stork a bit over a year ago. In the last year we have welcomed just under 7000 guests, poured 1646 cappuccinos and served almost twice as many nice cold (local!) beers. We have listened to the tips and suggestions from our staff and guests and in this blog we give you some updates on the how the year has been and the changes we have made. Just because a new year is good for reflecting and because we are proud of everything that we have done (with your help!!).
With our five rooms and cosy bar, our hostel feels a bit like a bed & breakfast. A ‘boutique’ hostel you could call it. No more memorising which floor you are on or which directions to take, we only have two hallways on one floor. Intimate, a bit more luxurious-but affordable and a little bit quirky, that’s the environment of our ‘little house on the quay’.
Do you hate dirty dishes? We do too! You are free to use our bowls, plates, cutlery and cups and WE do the dishes and put them back for you! Have you once opened a packed hostel fridge and had half of its contents tumble on the floor, leaving a mess? Our fridge is behind reception, where we make sure only labelled food goes in and out. No mess and no stealing!
Happy hour! We love our coffee and we want to share that with our guests. Monday – Friday between 8-9am we serve ALL coffees just for 1 euro! That’s a lot better to wake up to, than a crowded kitchen where you have to wait to use the kettle to make yourself a cup of instant coffee. All in all, we will do anything to make our guests feel comfortable in our home. The last year we have had amazing Workaway’ers working for us, who helped us taking care of you and the hostel. We have taken all the help and suggestions you all gave us very seriously and here are some results:
What we worked on
The long breakfast bar near the power points has been shortened and moved. This creates more space and we used the wood to extend the reception and bar. The menu has been updated with more drinks and we also painted it big on the wall so you could even pick your drink from across the canal! The night lights in the rooms have been covered with a dimming film: no more waking up with a light that is too bright for the mornings.
What we are working on
We have changed our wooden beds for metal bunk beds, which made it possible for us to change the layout of some rooms.
We are creating more tips and deals for you to make use of while exploring the Bierkade (the quay) and the city. We are getting more local businesses united to work together and this pays off for the wandering traveller and we will share this in our blogs and on our social media. Stay tuned!
Coming summer we’d like to introduce you to the Dutch slow drip, cold brew coffee, which we are working on perfecting as we speak!
We want to thank all our guests, former and new ones, all our Workawayers and everybody else who has been involved in the Golden Stork journey for all their help and input! We are ready for a new year!!
